While it would be tempting to connect to the root ف ر ص (f r ṣ) related to slitting, being the timespan in which one’s camels have access to a body of water shared with other herders, Aramaic פורסא / ܦܘܪܣܐ (pursā, “way out, knack, strategy, scheme”), from Ancient Greek πόρος (póros), acknowledging its pervasive colloquial use, should be believed to have developed its semantics to a “chance, opportunity, occasion” as well and therefore served as the source of the present Arabic term.
