Developed from the root ج ح ف (j ḥ f) meaning ”to draw a net closed”, “to capture”, “to carry off”, “to contract or pull close”, "to grapple”, “to tussle or contend physically”. Semantic development for a military unit influenced by Aramaic גוּפ (gawwēp, “to join close, to set close together, to interlock shields”), hence a group that fights side by side; compare Hebrew גּוּף (guf, “corps, organization, institution”).
